When did you first encounter poetry? How did you discover that you wanted to write poems?
Before I knew I could write poems, I discovered my love for reading. When I was little, my mother asked me to dust off a shelf full of books that we had at home. A task that I could never finish because whenever I started, an invisible force prevented me from continuing and instead moved me to leaf through them, to discover what was hidden inside. Then I would sit on the floor where I was surrounded by them, and I started to read. I would read a random page from Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, then to continue with Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 followed by poems by Machado and García Lorca. I think that at that moment my passion for literature was revealed. Only a couple of years later I would discover my ability to write poems in an exercise that consisted of creating a sentence with a certain word. I wrote half a page with the word that had been assigned to me. It was like turning on a faucet from which the words did not stop flowing.
¿Cuándo encontró la poesía por primera vez? ¿Cómo descubrió usted que quería escribir poemas?
Antes de saber que podía escribir poemas descubrí el amor por la lectura. Cuando pequeña mi mamá me pedía que sacudiera el polvo a una estantería llena de libros que teníamos en casa tarea que jamás lograba terminar porque siempre que comenzaba, una fuerza invisible me impedía continuar y en cambio me movía a hojearlos, a descubrir que escondían en su interior, entonces me sentaba en el piso rodeada de ellos y comenzaba a leer. Leía una página al azar del Viaje al centro de la Tierra de Jules Verne, para continuar con Fahrenheit 451 de Bradbury seguido de poemas de Machado y García Lorca creo que en ese momento mi pasión por la literatura fue develada. Solo un par de años más tarde descubriría mi capacidad de escribir poemas en un ejercicio que consistía en crear una oración con una palabra determinada. Yo escribí media página con la palabra que me habían asignado. Fue abrir una llave de la cual las palabras no dejaban de fluir.
Do you have a writing routine? A favorite time or place to write?
No. I don’t have a routine to write, but I do have a time when I like to do it and it’s at night. It’s at that moment when I can have the calm and tranquility that my creative process requires. The nearby forest, the stars, and the silence are my company at this time.
¿Tiene una rutina de escribir? ¿Una hora preferida o un lugar preferido?
No, no tengo una rutina para escribir, pero sí un tiempo en el cual me gusta hacerlo y es durante la noche, es en ese momento cuando puedo disponer de la calma y tranquilidad que requiere mi proceso creativo. El bosque cercano, las estrellas y el silencio son mi compañía a esas horas.
Where do your poems most often “come from”—an image, a sound, a phrase, an idea?
Images, sounds, landscapes, experiences, sensations, and people I have met are part of my inspiration to write poems. We must swim the turbulent waters of our own feelings and from there begin the arduous task of trying to seduce words. Trying to persuade them to spread their wings dropping seeds on the blank page, but there are times when they will try to be invisible, they will refuse to be transformed into a poem, and will agonize itself on paper transforming it into ashes.
¿De dónde vienen sus poemas? — ¿Una imagen, un sonido, una frase, o una idea?
Imágenes, sonidos, paisajes, vivencias, sensaciones, personas que he conocido son parte de mi inspiración para escribir poemas. Hay que nadar las aguas turbulentas de nuestros propios sentimientos y desde ahí comenzar la ardua tarea de intentar seducir a las palabras, intentar persuadirlas a que desplieguen sus alas dejando caer semillas sobre la página en blanco, pero hay ocasiones en las que se esmerarán en hacerse invisibles, negándose a ser transformadas en poema, y agonizarán sobre el papel transformadas en cenizas.
Which writers (living or dead) have influenced you the most?
There are many writers in many literary genres who have inspired me. From whom I learn every day and to whose works I always return to. As Jules Verne mentioned at the beginning, Ray Bradbury, Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca that I discovered very early and of course others that I would hear about a little later: Leo Tolstoy, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Charles Baudelaire, William Blake, Franz Kafka, Arthur Rimbaud, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Alejandra Pizarnik, Vicente Huidobro, Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, Federico García Lorca, Walt Whitman, and Paul Éluard among many others.

Son muchos los escritores de los más variados géneros literarios que me han inspirado y de los cuales aprendo cada día, a cuyas obras vuelvo siempre. Como mencionaba en un comienzo Julio Verne, Ray Bradbury, Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca que descubriera muy tempranamente y por supuesto otros que conocería un poco más tarde: Leo Tolstoy, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Charles Baudelaire,William Blake, Franz Kafka, Arthur Rimbaud, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Alejandra Pizarnik, Vicente Huidobro ,Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, Federico García Lorca, Walt Whitman, Paul Éluard entre muchos otros.
What excites you most about your new collection? (Significance of the title? Overarching themes? Process/experience of assembling it?)
I think what excites me the most is being able to see this book published, being able to hold it in my hands, when that happens and you can turn the pages of your book and read each poem, each one of them acquires a new dimension, they stop being your poems to have a life of their own, when reading the printed version, I hardly recognize them as my own and I wonder could I write something like that? Oh! the magic of poetry.
¿Cuales aspectos le emocionan más de su nueva colección?
Creo que lo que más me emociona es poder ver este libro publicado, poder tenerlo entre mis manos, cuando eso ocurre y puedes pasar las hojas de tu libro y leer cada poema, cada uno de ellos adquiere una nueva dimensión, dejan de ser tus poemas para tener vida propia, al leer la versión impresa prácticamente no los reconozco como propios y me pregunto ¿Yo pude escribir algo así? ¡Ah! la magia de la poesía.

I am a Chilean poet, cultural activist, digital creator and amateur painter. I graduated from Massasoit Community College in Communication Arts and currently I reside in Brockton, Massachusetts. Some of my literary works have been published in various anthologies as well as have been included in print and online literary magazines in the United States and Mexico. Many
years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity as a writer-in-residence for Hispanic Writers Week to provide creative writing workshops to youth from public schools in Chelsea and Dorchester. My life is coming and going between papers, pencils, paints, brushes, and my little recording studio.
