Two of the October Regional Events — in Boston and Lowell

April is national poetry month. For Massachusetts residents, who crave a more frequent celebration of verse, October is also the month many regions of Commonwealth are holding events to celebrate poetry and contemporary literature. MassPop is happy to be part of these celebrations.

Look for activities in your neighborhood or in the next town over. We’ll be featuring other events weekly. Be part of the excitement that revolves around who is writing and what is being written in Massachusetts in 2010.

Here are two activities already planned:

  • Boston Book Festival – October 16
With over 100 presenters, the Boston Book Festival will include novelists, poets, critics, biographers, essayists, journalists, academics, thinkers, publishers, and editors, many of whom are winners of prizes, such as the Nobel, the Pulitzer, and the National Book Award. Included in the list are Joyce Carol Oates, Atul Gawande, and E. O. Wilson, as well as poets, such as Kevin Young, Jill McDonough, Nick Flynn, and Edward Hirsch.
  • Lowell Celebrates Kerouac — September 30 – October 3
The fall celebration of Kerouac features panel discussions, readings, jazz and folk music, films, book signings, open mike events, a high school poetry competition, and tours of Kerouac’s Lowell places — including many sites described in his Lowell-based novels. Among the readers are novelist and MIT physicist, Alan Lightman, and novelist and screenwriter of an upcoming movie based on On the Road, Russell Banks. In addition to a reading of Kerouac’s poetry, poets Maggie Dietz, Sandra Lim, and Anthe Duvekot will read.

Look for more events in your area.
